Bespoke Forged Metalwork

My practice focuses on the medium of forged steel, making objects which are comprised of hot forged components which are then joined together using various methods ranging from hot riveting to custom made fasteners.

I work to a design method that is focused around each component having a reason to be a part of the composition, such that no space is wasted and the parts work together in both function and form.

My aim is to create a sense of elegance in the relatively cold and heavy material by heating the steel to a plastic state to form shapes which are not possible in other materials, or through other processes. Bronze and Stainless steel are also utilised in my work to highlight certain features such as fixings through their contrasting texture and colour.

My work is heavily inspired by traditional Japanese architecture. Specifically, the way that the buildings are constructed using various interlocking wooden joints, which then becomes a decorative feature in itself.  I am also influenced by modern architecture, the straight lines and angular shapes which the buildings form, with large expanses of concrete or steel.
