Window Grills

These security grills needed to be made for the windows in the extension on my workshop. Rather than using a welded mesh, or plain steel bars, I decided to take the oppertunity to make three distinct designs to showcase what’s possible throught the medium of forging steel.

Forged window security grill using traditional blacksmithing techniques with a contemporary design.

This design was a collaboration between myself and Ambrose Burne. Having worked with Ambrose on various projects over the years he has taught me a lot, esspecially at the start of my career. I’m very grateful for all he’s done for me and going forward in my career wanted to have a reference to that.

The rusted finish compliments the design well and also showcases how in certain situations it can be a very effective finish.

A contemporary window security grill utilising forged steel and stainless steel components. All assembled using traditonal blacksmithing techniques.

The design above was spawned from wanting to have an alternative to straight vertical and horizontal bars. I wanted a design which also had a sense of energy and excitment to it. Not having a frame and having the bar lengths be irregular not only helps to portray the idea of energy escaping, but also makes the design seen more integral to the surrounding structure.
Stainless steel was used for the small brackets which link the bars together to give strength. The texture and colour of the stainless also compliments the black of the forged steel effectively.
